LYATOSHYNSKY CLUB

Lyatoshynsky Club is a community of passionate people from culture and business, aimed at discovering, multiplying and promoting Ukrainian music at home and all around the world. Today, when our nation is experiencing a new phase of self-identification, there is an acute need to actualize national art, a large part of which remained unknown to the public due to the ideological vices of colonial policy.

Music is a true document of previous eras. In sounds, it captures emotional experiences, dreams, and feelings of our ancestors. Turning its pages, we not only learn about the past, but also feel its pulse. By encouraging composers to write new scores today, we thereby capture our present, our experience and worldview.

Our community is named after the outstanding Ukrainian composer Borys Lyatoshynsky, whose work and pedagogical activity became the main impetus for the development of professional music in the XX century. Borys Lyatoshynsky began his career in the era of modernism. Now we are only beginning to open the time period of the 1920s including his scores of that period, which lay unpublished for almost a century. The equally great period of the 1960s, marked by the work of the group “Kyiv avant-garde” (Lyatoshynsky’s students) also remains “terra incognita” for us. The Lyatoshynsky Club’s main focus is on this brightest and almost unknown due to ideological pressure flash of creativity in the history of Ukrainian music as well as on encouraging new scores of nowaday’s composers.

Uniting around the case of promoting national music, we identify the following areas as priorities:

- searching and publishing scores of the modernism period and the group “Kyiv avant-garde” (the 1920s and 1960s);
- organizing premieres of forgotten and little-known music;
- creating and presenting concert programs in which Ukrainian musical art will sound in the context of world masterpieces;
- supporting the work of contemporary composers and ordering new scores;
- sharing information about Ukrainian music in Ukraine and abroad;
- supporting Borys Lyatoshynsky’s museums in Kyiv and in his homeland, Zhytomyr;
- presentation of Ukrainian modernism and avant-garde as powerful cultural phenomena of world scale.
